The Amityville Horror

We’re talking about the new version here. Now I had seen this in theatres when it came out. I saw it with my then roommate, Nichole. Although she liked the actor who played George, she wasn’t impressed at all with the new version of The Amityville Horror.
Myself, I thought it was a darn good recreation. It worked well for me. It had the same creepy, strange, vibe that the original had. I particularly liked the very ending. To me, the little girl resetting everything in the house to rights by screaming made the show. You could just tell she hated to be left alone in that house.

I give this one 4 out of 5 stars.

And I promise you, I AM reading a book so you don’t always get movie reviews!

The Grudge 2

Sorry, I’ve been busy over the past week. This review is of The Grudge 2.

I loved The Grudge and I was hoping that unlike a lot of sequels, this one would be good. I got my wish. The Grudge 2 gives background information that would have been great to have had in The Grudge. The only problem I had was that we didn’t see nearly enough of Karen from the first movie. After all, she was the only one who had survived.

The Grudge 2, like it’s predecessor is scary because it’s not gory. There isn’t blood and guts everywhere. It’s the creepy kind of scary that makes you not want to turn off the lights when you go to bed, because you’re afraid of what might be lurking in the dark. That is definitely a plus in a horror film.

I give this 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

When a Stranger Calls

I wasn’t too sure about this one, especially seeing as how I’d never heard of anyone who was in it! But this one turned out to be really good.

It’s based on that good old urban legend about the babysitter who gets several “prank” phone calls, asking if she’s checked the children. When a Stranger Calls was very well done, regardless of the fact that the actors were, at least to me, unknown. This one didn’t feature a lot of special effects, unless you count all the really neat stuff in the house it takes place in. :) But I’ve noted that a lot of times, the simpler movies are the better ones.

This was a very good movie, and I definitely recommend it.

I’d give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

The first thing I have to say is WOW! I loved X-Men and X-Men 2: X-Men United, but THIS one blew the first two out of the water. The special effects in this one are absolutely amazing!

Now if you’ve seen X2, you already knew there would be a sequel because as they’re panning over Alkali Lake, you see the shape of a bird coming up under the water. So X-Men - The Last Stand was highly anticipated. It took them so long to make it though, that a lot of people I spoke to felt they’d never make the movie. But if you’ve seen X3, it’s hard to believe this was “The Last Stand” as there was something at the end that made me curious.

Of course, if you have the DVD as I do, and have looked at the alternate endings, I think they tried to make an ending to tie into the (hopefully) upcoming Wolverine movie. I’ve heard Hugh Jackman was quite excited to do the Wolverine movie and I’m hoping that if it truly is in the works, that it comes out soon. :) Can you tell he’s my favorite character? LOL

The sad part was the loss of 2 characters. I really wish they could have been a part of the whole movie, as it just didn’t seem like X-Men without them. But the addition of Beast was a nice one. They still forgot Gambit though. Go figure. *sigh*

I’d give this movie 5 out of 5 stars.

Carrie

I recently had the pleasure of watching the new version of Stephen King’s Carrie. I have to say that although I’ve seen both versions, I much prefer this one.

This one followed the book better, with the exception of the ending. But in this one, we get to see Carrie blowing up the town, we get to see the way she killed her mother in the book. It goes much smoother than the original movie does.

Truthfully, I like the ending to this movie better than the original or the book. I’m not fond of the fact that Carrie dies. It’s like she’s had to put up with all this crap, and then she gets the short end of the stick again, because she dies. So to see the ending changed was a pleasant surprise.

I’d give this 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

The Wicker Man

I just finished watching The Wicker Man. This is the new version with Nicholas Cage. I’d heard from several people that this movie wasn’t any good. I’d have to say I disagree. I rather liked the movie.

The only problem I found is that, as a practicing Wiccan, The Wicker Man portrays those of us who follow the old ways in a horrific light. It is no wonder that people still bring up images of things such as sacrifices, etc when they hear that one is Wiccan.

Other than that, the movie was very good. Subtle things that if you catch them, begin to help the viewer understand what is going on are scattered about the movie. It was rather slow paced, but at only 102 minutes, it really wasn’t a long movie.

I’d have to give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
